8 Months In: The Different Ways Our Sydney Gymnastics Venue Can Be Used

One of the things that has pleasantly surprised us during our first 8 months at Inner West Gymnastics is the range of enquiries we have received about using our gymnastics venue in Sydney's Inner West.

We built our centre to provide a high-quality training environment for our gymnasts. Since opening, however, we have also heard from visiting gymnastics teams, universities and other groups looking for a specialist space for training, practical education, courses and group activities.

Those conversations have shown us that a gymnastics venue can support far more than our regular class timetable. Sometimes a group needs the gymnastics equipment itself. Sometimes they need a sprung floor, a practical teaching environment or an experienced coaching team. Other bookings may need a combination of activity space and a separate area for theory, discussion or coursework.

Here are some of the ways our Strathfield South venue could support different programs.

Practical learning for universities and education providers

Practical education does not always fit neatly into a classroom or a general-purpose sports court.

Universities and education providers may need an environment where students, including pre-service teachers, can explore gymnastics, physical education, coaching, sport or movement-based learning in practice.

Our venue provides access to a purpose-built gymnastics environment, along with an upstairs room that can support theory, discussion and other classroom-style components of a program.

Depending on the booking, the facility may be hired independently or our qualified gymnastics coaches may be available to assist with practical delivery.

This flexibility allows us to discuss what students need to learn, how the practical and theory components could work together and whether a single session or recurring booking would suit the program.

Coach education and professional development

A specialist gymnastics venue can also provide a practical setting for coaching courses, workshops and professional development.

Course participants may need to observe demonstrations, practise progressions, discuss technique or connect theoretical learning with activities on the gym floor.

Our facility is fitted for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics training and includes vault, uneven bars, beams, sprung floor space and a tumble track. This gives course providers access to specialist equipment without trying to recreate a gymnastics environment in a standard hall.

The upstairs room can also provide a separate space for presentations, discussion, first aid or CPR components, and other classroom-based learning associated with a course.

School sport and physical education programs

Schools interested in bringing students to a gymnastics venue can enquire about one-off experiences, practical physical education activities or recurring programs.

Every school group is different, so we would begin by discussing the students’ ages, group size, learning goals and the type of experience the school would like to provide.

Where coaching support is required, we can also discuss whether our qualified gymnastics coaches are available to help develop and deliver a suitable session.

We also provide gymnastics coaching in some school settings. Because delivering a program at a school involves different requirements from bringing students to our venue, we will explore school-based gymnastics programs separately in a future article.

Training for visiting gymnastics teams

We have also welcomed enquiries from gymnastics teams travelling to Sydney for competitions and looking for somewhere to train during their visit.

For these bookings, the specialist equipment is naturally the priority. Our centre is fitted for WAG training, giving visiting teams access to the apparatus and sprung surfaces they need without relying on a general-purpose gym or sports hall.

These bookings may be occasional rather than recurring, but they are another example of how a dedicated gymnastics facility can support the wider sporting community.

Workshops, courses and small-group activities

Not every suitable booking needs to use every piece of gymnastics equipment.

The combination of sprung flooring, specialist apparatus and a separate upstairs room creates possibilities for practical workshops, movement-based learning, presentations and small-group courses.

A provider may need the gym floor for one component and a quieter learning space for another. Another group may primarily need the upstairs room but benefit from access to the wider facility.

We assess these enquiries individually because the activity, supervision, equipment and scheduling requirements can vary considerably. If you have an idea that does not fit neatly into the examples above, you are welcome to tell us what you have in mind.

One-off sessions and recurring venue hire

Some groups need a venue for a single day. Others need a consistent space for a university unit, school term, course series or ongoing program.

Inner West Gymnastics can consider both one-off sessions and recurring bookings, depending on the proposed activity and availability of the venue.

Our goal is not to force every booking into a standard package. We want to understand what the program needs, which parts of the facility would be useful and whether our venue and coaching team are the right fit.
